Gogglebox viewers rage as star sides with Trump in Zelensky suit row
Gogglebox viewers were left incredulous upon discovering one star’s stance on the Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky row.
Last week, the US President and Vice President JD Vance met with Ukraine’s leader in the White House for a meeting.
However, talks quickly descended into anarchy when Zelensky’s outfit choice was criticised by a reporter suddenly asking, ‘Why don’t you wear a suit?’
The 47-year-old politician has seldom worn a suit since taking office, responding to the question with confusion and stating that he will ‘wear a costume after this war will finish.’
On Friday night’s episode of Gogglebox, the sofa critics watched the heated exchange unfold once more, which culminated in Zelensky storming out of the room, having been accused of ‘gambling with World War Three’ by Trump.
What riled viewers up most, though, was Giles Wood’s opinions on the matter, as he made it clear where he stands.
‘In hindsight, Mary, it might have been better if he had worn a suit,’ he told his wife.
Giles was later chastised by his wife for repeating what was being said by the world leaders.
‘He said he’s not playing cards,’ he copied, to which Mary spat: ‘I heard, Giles!’
That wasn’t the only time she put her long-time husband in his place.
At one point, Zelensky told Trump and Vance that they were ‘raising the volume of [their] voice but not the logic of [their] argument.’
‘You think that if you will speak very loudly about the war…’, he began before being cut off.
‘I don’t think he was speaking loudly,’ Giles commented in defence of Trump.
Snapping, Mary responded: ‘We can see which side you’re on.
‘You’re on the side of the wrong’uns!’
Taking to X as the marital row unfolded, viewers did not mince their words when letting Giles know what they thought of his political opinions.
‘Why would anyone defend Trump/Vance’s position… baffling Giles’, wrote SMGEcon.
‘Glad even Mary called Giles out there’, said PamelaJoanne94.
‘Giles is making himself look a right t**t here lol’, added wanderesc1.
An infuriated DavyWatt40 said that the TV star was ‘talking endless dribble that makes no sense’, while SueyQP branded his remarks ‘offensive’.
Of course, this is not the first time Giles has voiced his political beliefs, having made no secret of his support for the Conservative Party previously, despite it leading to stern words from viewers at home.
In contrast with Giles, who has been on the programme since 2015, the other Gogglebox cast members were very much in Zelensky’s corner.
‘Why would you wear a suit? He’s come from a war-torn country!’, asked a baffled Sue.
‘Oh, yes! That is a man right there. He said, I’ve got bigger problems than wearing a suit,’ praised Amira and Amani.
Sharing his views, Simon said: ‘You’ve got these bullies humiliating you but, at the same time, you need them to be on your side, what do you do?’
He added that Zelensky and Trump have long-standing beef, saying that Trump simply ‘just doesn’t like him.’
‘This is going great,’ joked Pete as the atmosphere in the Oval Office became thick.
‘Zelensky leaving like, “Couldn’t have gone better!”,’ Sophie quipped with a smile.
Trump and Zelensky’s clash was a major talking point for days. The likes of Piers Morgan also chimed in with his thoughts, alleging that Trump called him ‘for advice’ before the meeting.
Also, days after the suit row, the White House came out to defend Elon Musk’s casual work attire, the irony of which was not lost on most people.
Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
