WALES full-back Liam Williams, who was on the radar of the Dragons at the start of the season, has signed for Saracens until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old negotiated an early release from his contract with Japanese side Kubota Spears because he is expecting his first child with his wife Sophie.

Now he has returned for a second spell with Sarries, who are in need of cover in the back three after an injury to the influential Alex Goode.

Williams played for the Barnet -based club between 2017 and 2019 when he helped them win an English Premiership title and become European champions.

The 92-times capped full-back, who can also play on the wing, said: “The last few weeks have been a whirlwind for me in all honesty.

“My pregnant wife and I recently made the difficult decision not to return to Kubota Spears for a second season, a club that welcomed me so warmly 12 months ago after the World Cup.

“One of the Sarries management contacted my agent to see if I would be interested in finishing the season with them due to injuries within the squad, and it didn’t take long to say yes!

“I thoroughly enjoyed my previous time with the club. It was a special time in both my career as well as the club winning multiple trophies, and the unique culture of the club left a mark with me.

“I can’t wait to join the squad, following the birth of my first child, and help them achieve their goals.”

The Dragons were alerted to Williams’ desire to return from Japan at the start of the season and, with then boss Dai Flanagan having worked with him previously, would have been keen on a deal but only if the price was right.

Now the speedster, who had two spells with the Scarlets and one with Cardiff, will play in England rather than return to Wales.

His return should boost the national team as Williams will be able to add some experience for the upcoming Six Nations campaign.

Sarries will also profit from his quality at the back for the rest of the campaign.

“Liam had an incredible impact on our group both on and off the pitch during his first spell at Saracens. He is a world class player who has been at the top of his game for well over a decade now,” said director of rugby Mark McCall.

“The opportunity to bring Liam back to the club was a no brainer for us and we can’t wait to see him back in the Saracens shirt.”
